Spotlight: Susan Turkopuls

SCAC is pleased to spotlight Susan Turkopuls. As the association’s Research and Training Director she leads a team dedicated to providing resources through various means to help county officials perform their jobs effectively. From communicating important updates from state and federal agencies, to training through SCAC’s educational programs and events, to researching specific topics, Susan and her team keep their fingers on the pulse of what is most important for county leaders to know. When asked what she enjoys most about her job, she says, “I have always had a calling for public service, and I find it very rewarding to do my part by keeping county leaders informed and up-to-date on important issues.”

Susan earned her Master of Public Administration degree from the University of South Carolina and has spent her 24-year career in government research. Prior to joining the association in 2005, she worked eight years as an economic development manager for the S.C. Department of Commerce managing the department’s industry and labor information program and writing proposals for prospective companies.

Susan’s colleagues describe her as an inquisitive learner, thoughtful, professional, and supportive. Her knowledge of county government and her ability to efficiently gather resources for decision makers is second to none. She is a proud mother of a high school senior and a college junior, and enjoys spending time with family, her two dogs and cat, reading, cooking, and watching Gamecock football. As a military brat, she has a life-long love and appreciation of exploring other cultures. She loves travel and looks forward to traveling more as she and her husband transition to the empty nest phase of their lives.
