Spotlight: John DeLoache

John DeLoache is a Senior Staff Attorney focusing on general legal research and the association’s risk management and insurance programs. He is involved in many of the association’s educational programs such as the Institute of Government for County Officials and the planning and zoning continuing education offerings. He also serves as an instructor for the annual training program for clerks to county council. Prior to joining SCAC in 2007, John was a litigation attorney with the law firm Tompkins and McMaster and a litigation consultant with Huron Consulting.

Outside of work John devotes much of his time to supporting education and cultural programs. He has been a member of the South Carolina Bar’s Law Related Education (LRE) Committee since 2002 and has served as judge for the South Carolina and National High School Mock Trial and We the People - US Constitution competitions. In 2005, the South Carolina Bar named him LRE Lawyer of the Year. Currently, John serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Bar Foundation and will become President-Elect in July 2022. He is a long-time supporter of the Columbia City Ballet, the Columbia Museum of Art, and Historic Columbia.

John’s colleagues describe him as a consummate professional with a broad knowledge of county government who is always willing to pitch in to get the job done no matter the task. His compassion is evident in his leading of the association’s annual adopt-a-family program at Christmastime. Outside of work John also enjoys traveling, whether it is a faraway location or just a weekend at the beach. His favorite trips include a cruise down Canada’s St. Lawrence River, Hawaii’s Big Island, and Portugal. His next big trip is a tour of England and Scotland. His favorite quote is:
