Board Member Spotlight: Mary Anderson

As we continue our series highlighting members of the SCAC Board of Directors, we'd like to introduce you to Mary Anderson. Mary serves as SCAC second vice president and vice chairwoman of Chesterfield County Council.

Where is your hometown?
Cheraw, S.C., is my hometown. I was born and raised here in Chesterfield County.

How would you like to see Chesterfield County grow in the next year?
Intentionally. Our county is working with our Council of Governments to complete countywide comprehensive and strategic plans. We are also creating a new countywide planning board. Rather than boards for individual towns, we will all come together to ensure everyone is at the table when planning for the future.

What is an interesting fact about your county?
While most everyone knows that Chesterfield County is rich in history, fewer people know about our wealth in minerals. We hold large deposits of granite, kaolin, most all types of sand and even gold in Chesterfield County.

What’s your favorite place in Chesterfield County?
There are so many "favorites" in Chesterfield County. If I want a beautiful, quiet drive, I go to Wexford Road in Chesterfield. For a great place to walk and enjoy being outdoors, Cheraw State Park is unmatched. McBee has McLeod Farms and the best store for meat, sandwiches and locally sourced goods. One place I feel especially connected to, though, is Old St. David's church and cemetery. It is such a beautiful, peaceful place to pray and feel connected to the people in my community and life who helped shape me along the way. Thinking about all that has happened in that one location from the Revolutionary War on is pretty powerful, too.

How did you get involved in public service?
I've always been involved in public service, even as a young person.  My parents were active in our community, so it was a natural part of my childhood experience and expectation.  I served on the American Legion Auxiliary in high school, as well as local boards in-town after moving back from college.  When the county council seat became available, I was encouraged to run by folks in my town and church. I never knew how much I would learn along the way. It's truly an honor to serve.

What do you do when you aren't serving Chesterfield County?
I am pretty obsessed with playing tennis.  I'm not good at it, but I sure enjoy being on the court with friends and family.

What’s a cause that you’re passionate about?
Rural healthcare is a cause I am passionate about.  Serving on the board of trustees for McLeod Hospital System has given me a new perspective of the challenges faced and the need to be a voice in our rural communities.

Where is a place you’ve always wanted to visit?
Cappadocia, Turkey, has always been on my list. This unique region of fairy chimneys and cave dwellings, along with its poignant history, make it a place I would really like to experience.
