Spotlight: Robert Benfield

SCAC is pleased to spotlight Robert Benfield, Director of Risk Management Services for the S.C. Counties Workers’ Compensation and Property & Liability Trusts. Since 1998, he has worked with South Carolina counties on their risk management and safety programs by conducting on-site assessments and training, reviewing policies and procedures, formulating staffing studies, and working closely with county sheriffs’ offices and detention centers. He also teaches risk management and liability classes as a guest instructor at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Robert’s colleagues describe him as a dedicated, loyal team player who is deeply committed to the safety of our counties’ law enforcement and detention officers. He cherishes the personal relationships he has with members of the trusts. When asked about his career, Robert says, “A simple definition of risk management is trying to keep bad stuff from happening! Assisting members with their risk management and safety programs and seeing reductions in injuries is what brings me the greatest satisfaction in my job. I truly enjoy helping people and I am still excited after 29 years to help counties make a difference in the lives of their employees.”

Prior to joining SCAC, Robert worked for Sedgwick James Insurance Company. He holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina and has earned the Associate in Risk Management designation and Associate in General Insurance designation from the Insurance Institute of America.

Robert’s passions are his family and diving. He is an assistant dive instructor with the Wateree Dive Center in Columbia and has made over 500 dives, mostly in the Cooper River. He and his wife enjoy the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. His favorite quote is from his high school yearbook:

“Every hand’s a winner, every hand’s a loser, you decide your fate by how you play your cards!”
